The Brief

Fact-checking the October 13, 2026, New York gubernatorial debate between Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul and Republican Bruce Blakeman, the New York Post examined key claims from both candidates.

On immigration, Hochul's claim that Nassau County's 287(g) ICE agreement enables "rogue agents roaming the streets" was rated mostly false; the deal allows county jail staff to check detainee names against a federal database. Blakeman's assertion that Hochul previously opposed driver's licenses for undocumented immigrants and was endorsed by the NRA was rated true.

Regarding corrections, Hochul's statement that the 2,000 fired corrections officers engaged in an illegal strike was deemed half-true, as many were on pre-approved medical leave and 848 were later rehired. On energy, Blakeman's promise to halve utility bills by fracking was rated highly unlikely, while Hochul's claim that President Trump blocks her energy projects was rated half-true, given her own policies like the 2019 Climate Act also raise costs.

Hochul's claim of cutting middle-class taxes to a 70-year low was half-true, as rate cuts were offset by extensions of high-income tax surcharges. Her assertion of New York having the fastest-growing economy was technically true for one quarter but masked high taxes and population stagnation.
