The Brief

HBO's award-winning show Girls will return for a limited five-episode run, ten years after the series finale aired. Creator, writer, and star Lena Dunham made the announcement in a mock Zoom call with original cast members Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet, and Andrew Rannells, all of whom are set to return. Production is scheduled to begin in 2027, and Judd Apatow will return as executive producer.

Dunham said in a statement that the cast always said they would only return if there was a specific story they were burning to tell. She said that around her 40th birthday, the characters began talking to her again. The revival will explore the "milestone of turning forty," according to Amy Gravitt, executive vice-president of HBO programming.

Girls ran for six seasons from 2012 to 2017, was nominated for 19 Emmys and won two. The show's title for the limited run has not been announced. Adam Driver, who had a breakout role as Dunham's on-and-off love interest, was absent from HBO's official statement.

Dunham's 2026 memoir Famesink included allegations of verbally aggressive and physically imposing on-set behavior by Driver, who has not publicly commented. The revival's statement also does not include former co-showrunner Jenni Konner.
