The Brief

Four people, including three children, were killed in an active shooter incident at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz identified the victims as a 5-year-old, an 8-year-old, an 11-year-old, and a teacher. The 16-year-old gunman, a Bend resident, was killed after a community member followed him inside the school and shot him. Two other victims—a 7-year-old and a 54-year-old teacher—were hospitalized with critical injuries.

Police received multiple calls about an active shooter on school property, beginning at 12:59 p.m. with a report of someone shooting into a car near the school with a long gun. Officers arrived at the scene at 1:02 p.m. The gunman forced his way into the school by shooting at locked doors.

Gov. Tina Kotek (D-OR) said, "My heart is absolutely broken today... We must come together and support each other, neighbor to neighbor, Oregonian to Oregonian." Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) said he was monitoring the situation, and FBI Director Kash Patel assured that the Portland FBI field office was following closely, adding, "We will make every resource they need available."

Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook expressed the community's grief and said immediate priorities are caring for students and staff and assisting law enforcement.
