2026 Primary Election results certified with few changes, recount in Republican race

A recount in a Republican primary and barely a ripple in the vote totals once every provisional and absentee ballot got counted. That's actually the story here, even if it's not a dramatic one. Guam's Election Commission did the boring, necessary work of finishing the count and the numbers held. No mystery boxes of ballots, no midnight database updates, just a slow tally that ended close to where it started.

We'd like to say that's unremarkable, but given how election administration has been treated as a national punching bag the last few cycles, unremarkable is worth noting out loud. A close Republican race triggering an automatic recount is exactly what's supposed to happen when margins are thin. It's the system working, not the system being gamed. Nobody had to sue anybody to get there.

That said, we're not interested in grading election offices on a curve just because nothing blew up this time. Guam's commission still owes voters a full accounting of how many provisional and absentee ballots were rejected and why, not just a headline number of "few changes." Certification without transparency on the rejected pile isn't really certification, it's a press release.

Still, credit where it's due. A clean count and an honest recount process are low bars, but plenty of jurisdictions on the mainland have tripped over them in recent years. Guam didn't. That's worth one paragraph of praise before we go back to demanding better disclosure next cycle.
