Twenty-seven people dead, dozens more wounded, and the only official word is that the gunmen are still out there. That’s a horrifying sentence to read at any hour. And yet here we are again, waiting for names, waiting for motives, waiting for the same angry shout into the void. No arrests. No one in handcuffs. Detectives are "working to find" them, as if that reassures anyone.

We already know what comes next. The cable talkers will pivot first to hunting for a policy angle, then to hunting for a political angle, and somewhere in between the actual victims become props. But notice what doesn't get asked in those panels: why these killers aren't already in custody, and what happens to a country where that fact doesn't shock anyone anymore. The immediate problem isn't a debate about the Second Amendment. The immediate problem is that people with guns are killing other people, and nobody has been caught.

That's not a tough call. It's just the truth of the moment. We expect law enforcement to take risks, work overnight, and bring these monsters to justice. They deserve the public's full support in doing that, not a lecture about reform before the bodies are even counted. The Republicans who fund the police and demand consequences for violent crime are on the right side of this, and it's past time the rest of the country caught up.

If this was a bad weekend, it will be forgotten by Friday. If it wasn't, we'll see another round of politicians reading statements into a camera, pretending they're doing something. We've heard the speeches. We've seen the hashtags. What we haven't seen is the part where the law catches up with the killers. Until that changes, more families will be planning funerals instead of Sunday dinners. That should scare every one of us.
