AOC says ‘Woke 1 was crazy,’ but Democrats still owe voters an explanation

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez looking back at 2020 and calling it "Woke 1 was crazy" is a strange kind of concession. It sounds like she's leveling with people, admitting the defund-the-police signage and the gender pronoun seminars and the corporate DEI trainings went off the rails. But listen closer and it's not an apology, it's a filing system. Woke 1 gets boxed up and labeled "that phase," which conveniently means nobody has to answer for who pushed it, who benefited from it, or why it took over school boards, HR departments, and city councils for the better part of four years.

That's the trick. You get to say "yeah, that was too much" without saying "I was wrong" or "I did that." AOC didn't vote against those defund resolutions. She didn't push back when activists were calling cops racist by definition. She rode that wave as high as anyone. Now that the wave crashed and voters punished Democrats for it in 2024, the move is to treat it like weather that happened to the party rather than a set of choices the party made.

Voters aren't owed a rebrand. They're owed an actual account of what went wrong, who's still in charge of the same institutions, and whether the "Woke 2" version is just Woke 1 with better PR. Renaming an era isn't the same as reckoning with it, and pretending otherwise is its own kind of dishonesty.
