Bill Maher rips left-wing lawmaker for sacrificing liberal values to appease Muslim voters

Bill Maher, of all people, is the one pointing out that progressive politicians will drop their own supposed principles the second a bigger voting bloc walks in the room. Melissa Chaudhry is running as the pure progressive alternative to Adam Smith, but when it came to courting Muslim voters in her district, LGBT rights quietly disappeared from her pitch. Maher called it out on his own show, which tells you how obvious the maneuver was.

This is the part the left rarely wants to admit about itself: the coalition only holds together as long as nobody has to choose. The moment two "protected" constituencies actually disagree, something gets sanded off the platform, and it's usually whichever group has less leverage in that particular zip code. In Seattle, apparently, that's gay rights.

We don't say this to score points for Maher, who still disagrees with us on plenty. We say it because it's a useful window into how identity politics actually functions once it meets a real election. It's not a moral framework, it's a math problem, and politicians solve for the coalition, not the conviction. Chaudhry can call herself the values candidate. The values just depend on the room she's in.
