Buttigieg to stump for New Mexico Democrats

Pete Buttigieg picking New Mexico of all places to make his campaign swing tells you everything about where his head is at. This isn't really about Deb Haaland's governor's race or helping Gabe Vasquez hang onto his House seat. New Mexico just landed an early slot on the 2028 primary calendar, and Mayor Pete knows it. He's not doing local Democrats a favor so much as introducing himself to the exact voters who'll matter first next time around.

That's fine, that's politics, everybody does it. But let's not pretend the trip is about Las Cruces. Buttigieg spent four years as Transportation Secretary presiding over a supply chain mess, a rail disaster in East Palestine that he was slow to even show up for, and airline chaos that became a punchline. Now he's rebranding himself as a heartland-friendly Midwestern everyman who can win back the voters Democrats lost. New Mexico is just the first stop on that audition tour, and Haaland's campaign is the backdrop.

Democrats keep telling themselves their bench is deep and their 2028 field will sort itself out organically. What's actually happening is a bunch of ambitious people treating down-ballot races as personal launchpads while the party pretends it's still about local issues like crime, the border, and cost of living in New Mexico. Voters there aren't stupid. They'll notice when the guy showing up to stump for their governor is clearly more interested in Iowa and New Hampshire than in them.
