Byron Donalds shuts down Bill Maher’s claim on GOP primary racism, says 'Florida is a meritocracy'

Bill Maher looked at a primary map and decided the real story was pigment, not politics. Byron Donalds looked at the same map and said, in effect, come on. That's the exchange in a nutshell, and it's worth sitting with because it's such a familiar move. A Black conservative underperforms in a few rural counties and suddenly the explanation has to be racism, never ideology, never name recognition, never the fact that DeSantis was the sitting governor with a statewide machine behind him.

Donalds' answer was simple and it landed because it was true: Florida runs on merit, not identity math. Voters in the Panhandle weren't voting against a Black man, they were voting for whoever they already knew and trusted, the same way primary voters everywhere do. Maher, to his credit, is usually willing to needle his own side, but this was the lazy version of that instinct, reaching for race as the default explanation because the alternative, that people just prefer other candidates for ordinary reasons, is less interesting on television.

What's actually revealing is how uncomfortable that answer makes some people. The assumption baked into Maher's question is that a Black conservative can only lose to a white opponent because of race, never on the merits. That's a lower opinion of Florida voters than Donalds himself seems to hold. He didn't flinch, didn't perform outrage, just corrected the record and moved on, which is more than most people get on that couch.
