CNN says it was left off Air Force One for Trump's Saturday trip

The pool seat list for Air Force One has never been a public utility. It’s a small plane with a smaller set of seats, and the White House decides who fills them. That has been true for every president, including the ones who pretended to love the press. So the real news from Saturday is not that CNN got left behind. It’s that CNN thinks a college football game in Tennessee is a story at all.

The First Amendment says Congress shall make no law abridging freedom of the press. It doesn’t say the president must provide a chartered ride to every network that attacks him. CNN can still report, criticize, and run endless chyrons about democracy in danger. They just can’t do it from the aisle seat next to the president. No one is silencing CNN. They’re just not giving them a lift to a football game.

Look at the context. This is the same network whose executives begged for an interview with Trump during the election, the same one that sent hosts to Mar-a-Lago when it was good for ratings. Now they’re playing offended because the White House treats them like the hostile outlet they are. The White House doesn’t owe a seat to its critics. Especially when the criticism has nothing to do with news and everything to do with a narrative.

Saturday’s trip was a leisure event, not a state meeting. The press pool covers official business. When the president watches a game, the public doesn’t need a play-by-play from three networks. The only drama here is CNN’s ego. If they want access, maybe they should try covering the president fairly. Otherwise, there are plenty of other outlets happy to fill the seat.
