Dem Senate Hopeful Runs From Kamala Harris Support

Mary Peltola's team saw that Kamala Harris endorsement email land in inboxes and reportedly scrambled to distance themselves from it within hours. That tells you everything about where the Harris brand stands right now, even inside her own party. This isn't some Fox News narrative being imposed from outside. It's a Democratic Senate candidate in a swing-ish state deciding that being associated with the last Democratic presidential ticket is a liability she can't afford.

Alaska isn't a deep-red lock, but it's not exactly a place where "must-win" progressive framing from a California-based PAC plays well either. Peltola knows her constituents. She's tried to run as an independent-minded, fish-and-guns Democrat who can win over Republicans and split-ticket voters. Harris showing up uninvited to claim her as part of a national resistance project undercuts that entire pitch. It's the equivalent of someone trying to sell a car as fuel-efficient while a billboard behind them screams "GAS GUZZLER."

What's telling is that Harris's team apparently didn't check with the campaign before firing off the email, or didn't care. That's not a small oversight for a former running mate and presumptive party leader to make. Either she doesn't have a great read on which candidates actually want her fingerprints on their race, or she does and sent it anyway because national validators matter more to some consultants than they do to actual voters in Anchorage or Fairbanks.

We've said for a while that Harris's political shelf life is shorter than Democratic leadership wants to admit. This is a real-time example. When your own party's candidates are actively swatting away your support in public, that's not a messaging problem. That's a candidate problem.
