Democrats Shift from Embracing AI to Pushing for Slower Growth

Barack Obama popping back up to tell Washington to pump the brakes on AI would land differently if we didn’t all remember 2016. Back then, his White House was praising artificial intelligence as the shiny edge of American innovation. Now the message is basically: slow it down. Fine, people can change their minds. But it’s hard to take the sudden caution seriously when it tracks so neatly with the politics of the moment.

This is the pattern with Democrats and tech. They love the “future” when it sounds like grants, glossy reports, and good jobs in friendly zip codes. Then the minute a new technology threatens to move too fast, disrupt too much, or slip out of their regulatory grip, the tone flips to alarm. They cheered the race, then complained about the speed. That’s not leadership. That’s managing headlines.

Yes, AI raises real questions: jobs, privacy, deepfakes, national security. Adults should talk about those without turning it into a panic button. But “slower growth” is not a plan. It’s a posture. And if Washington slows down while China keeps sprinting, we don’t get a gold star for being cautious. We get weaker.

We’d rather see a clear-eyed approach: protect critical systems, punish fraud, secure data, and keep American companies building. Don’t strangle the whole sector because it’s suddenly inconvenient. Innovation doesn’t wait for Washington to feel comfortable. If Democrats want trust on AI, they should start by explaining why the story changed so fast.
