Deprogrammed: Former DSA insider reveals ‘frightening’ socialist

Jake Altman sat on the Democratic Socialists of America’s executive board. He didn’t leave because he read a think piece or got mad at a tweet. He left because he saw the group up close, and what he saw was a machine built to crush dissent and a politics that excuses tyranny when the tyrant wears the right label. That’s a useful confession for every American who still thinks the DSA is just a hobby for people who like Berniе’s old campaign memes.

The details Altman gives are specific, and they should embarrass the left. Dissenters weren’t debated. They were purged. And when Venezuela’s Maduro regime needed defenders, the DSA was there to oblige, calling elections free and fair while the country starved. That’s not a policy disagreement. That’s a moral failure hiding inside a progressive brand. The same people who lecture us about "democratic norms" at home are perfectly comfortable with a dictatorship, so long as the dictator calls himself a socialist.

We would do well to pay attention. The DSA has real influence in the Democratic Party, especially in city halls and congressional offices. Altman’s story reminds us that the loudest voices on the left aren’t interested in honest disagreement. They’re interested in loyalty. Loyalty to the movement, not to the truth. And if that means defending a brutal regime or silencing a member who asks awkward questions, so be it. That is who they are. The only surprise is that any of them are honest enough to say so out loud.
