El-Sayed Claims Medical Degree Justifies Child Gender Transitions

Abdul El-Sayed stood in front of Michigan State students and played the “trust the doctor” card like it’s a magic credential. He says his medical degree is reason enough to settle the argument over child gender transitions, and that the government should keep its hands off. That sounds soothing until you remember what he’s actually asking for: adults in white coats making life-altering decisions for minors, with the public told to hush. A degree isn’t a blank check for irreversible medicine.

“Doctors, not the government” is a cute line, but it skips the part where the government already draws boundaries in pediatrics all the time. We regulate drugs, require parental consent, and set age limits because kids aren’t just smaller adults. And this isn’t a tonsillectomy. We’re talking about interventions that can permanently change a child’s body and future fertility. If Democrats want fewer guardrails here than we have for getting a tattoo, they should say that out loud. Kids get caution, not ideology in scrubs.

It also isn’t honest to pretend this is all neutral science, neatly settled. Medical associations fight over standards, countries overseas are pumping the brakes, and families get whiplash from shifting guidelines and pressure campaigns. When El-Sayed says “let doctors decide,” he’s really saying “let the most aggressive clinics set the rules,” and let politicians like him wash their hands of the outcomes. That’s convenient for a candidate, not comforting for parents. Parents deserve a say, and lawmakers have a duty.

Michigan voters should hear what’s being sold here: less accountability, fewer limits, and a lot of confidence from a politician who wants you to outsource your judgment. We can respect medicine without turning it into a priesthood. If El-Sayed can’t acknowledge the risks, the uncertainty, and the reality that minors need extra protection, he’s not offering compassion. He’s offering permission.
