Ex-Dem fundraiser traces socialist surge to Biden-era leadership vacuum: ‘There’s no one there’

Lindy Li isn't some outside critic taking potshots. She raised money for these people. And now she's saying out loud what a lot of Democratic insiders have been muttering privately for two years: nobody's actually in charge. Biden faded, the party covered for it as long as it could, and when the cover finally came off there was nothing underneath. That's not a talking point. That's a fundraiser describing the room she was in.

Into that vacuum walks the DSA, not because socialism suddenly got more popular but because it's organized and everyone else is exhausted. Zohran Mamdani didn't win in New York because the city fell in love with democratic socialism overnight. He won because he showed up with a message and a machine while the Democratic establishment was busy pretending Biden could run again. Vacuums get filled by whoever bothers to show up.

We'd enjoy this more if it weren't a preview of our own problem. A party with no bench and no plan is an invitation, and somebody always accepts it. Right now that somebody is the DSA. The lesson isn't "Democrats are doomed," it's that leadership vacuums don't stay empty, and the people who fill them are rarely the moderates everyone assumed would be waiting in the wings.

Li's not wrong to be alarmed. She helped build the party that's now watching its base drift toward people who think Cuba had some good ideas. That should worry anyone who cares about having a real opposition party instead of a fringe with better branding.
