Ex-GOP Governor Endorses Democrat in Kansas Senate Showdown

Bill Graves isn’t just “crossing party lines.” He’s doing it with a camera on, in a video made for X, blessing a Democrat pastor as the answer to Kansas’ problems. That’s his right. But spare us the melodrama about Roger Marshall “turning his back on Kansas.” That line is built for a clip, not for Kansans who have watched Marshall show up, vote, and take the usual punches that come with being a Republican in Washington. This isn’t courage. It’s a performance.

Graves can like Adam Hamilton personally. Lots of people like their pastor. The question is what Hamilton will vote for when Schumer is counting noses and the national Democratic machine is writing the checks. Graves is pretending this is a local, character-only race. It won’t be. A Kansas Senate seat is a Senate seat, and it decides judges, border policy, spending, and whether the next Trump agenda has a shot. A nice biography doesn’t cancel party control of the Senate.

The “turned his back” charge is also convenient because it avoids specifics. Which vote? Which bill? Which fight did Marshall duck? If Graves has receipts, he should show them. If all he has is vibes and disappointment, then this endorsement is really about him, not about the state. Meanwhile, Democrats get to use a familiar trick: recruit a friendly face, slap a Republican endorsement on it, and hope voters forget the rest of the ticket.

Kansas Republicans should treat this as a reminder, not a crisis. Old-guard figures will always have their grudges and nostalgia. The job now is to keep the focus on outcomes: who will stand with President Trump on the border, energy, and getting spending under control, and who will empower the same Washington crowd that created today’s mess.
