Family’s dog fights off bear that charged 6-year-old boy: video

A dog does what state governments increasingly can't seem to manage: show up, do the job, protect the kid. A bear charges a six-year-old and a family pet steps between them without a task force, a grant program, or a press conference. That's the whole story, and it's a good one.

We bring this up not to knock a state senator for saying something nice about a dog, because he's right, it is a remarkable bond. But notice how the instinct in these moments, even a wholesome local one, is to reach for a quote about "our communities" rather than just letting the video speak. The video already speaks. A family in bear country, doing the ordinary things families do outside, and an animal that earned its kibble for the next decade in about four seconds.

There's something worth sitting with here about self-reliance that doesn't need a policy debate to make its point. Nobody dialed 911 and waited on hold. Nobody filed an incident report before acting. A dog saw a threat to a child and moved. That's the instinct we'd like to see rewarded more often in how we talk about safety generally, whether it's a bear in the yard or something else entirely: less narrating the danger, more standing between the kid and it.
