Giants remain non-committal on wearing Pride Night hats months

The Giants had a season so bad that the only thing anyone will remember is the Pride Night mess. Four pitchers, including Ryan Walker, declined to wear the rainbow-colored “SF” hats last June. The team’s response months later is not “yes” or “no.” It’s “we’ll get back to you.” That’s not leadership. That’s a ballclub hoping the question goes away before spring training.

The pitchers deserve more than silence. They made a personal stand, likely knowing it would cost them in the clubhouse and on social media. The front office, meanwhile, is trying to have it both ways. Keep the progressive cred by hosting Pride Night, but stop short of confirming the hats so nobody has to answer for it later. That’s cowardice wearing a public relations smile. If the team believes in the celebration, say so. If they think the protest exposed a deeper unrest in the franchise, address that too.

What we’re watching is a franchise that learned nothing from a very public rebellion. The Giants are not being non-committal because they’re thoughtful. They’re non-committal because they know a forced uniform policy will backfire again. But refusing to give an answer means the controversy will follow them right into next June. They still don’t get it. A few honest sentences from the front office would do more for the team than another rainbow hat ever will.
