GOP blocks Schumer's effort to ground taxpayer funding for Trump's Qatari Air Force One

Chuck Schumer wants us to believe he's suddenly worried about how the Air Force One retrofit gets paid for. That's rich coming from a guy who's voted to blow through spending caps more times than anyone can count. The bill got blocked, as it should have, because this was never really about "nuclear concerns" or taxpayer stewardship. It was about making noise around the fact that Trump accepted a plane from Qatar and Democrats still haven't figured out how to attack him for it without sounding ridiculous.

Here's the thing nobody on that side wants to say out loud: presidents fly in retrofitted aircraft, that process costs money, and Boeing has been slow-walking the actual replacement jets for years now under both parties. If Schumer had a real, substantive gripe about the retrofit contract or the money involved, fine, put it on the record and let's have that fight. Instead we got a symbolic vote designed to generate a headline, not fix a problem.

What's actually worth watching is whether this retrofit gets done on time and on budget, because that's the part with real consequences. Air Force One being years behind schedule is an embarrassment regardless of who's in the Oval Office. Turning it into a gotcha moment about a gifted plane just distracts from asking Boeing and the Pentagon the harder questions about why this program has been such a mess for so long.

Senate Republicans were right to shut this down for what it was: theater dressed up as oversight.
