GOP sends tough message to lawmakers considering ditching Trump ahead of midterms

Two convention nights instead of one. That's the message, and it's not subtle. If you're a House Republican quietly wondering whether the smart midterm play is to put a little daylight between yourself and Trump, the RNC just answered that question for you before you finished asking it.

Putting him on the same night as Vance is the more interesting choice, honestly. That's not an accident of scheduling. It reads like the party trying to fuse the present and the future into one image, rather than let anyone draw a line between them. Whatever jockeying is happening under the surface for 2028, the RNC wants it to look, on stage at least, like a continuation rather than a succession fight.

There's a real argument for why this works. Trump's coalition didn't come to the party through a platform committee, it came through him, and Republicans who think they can quietly borrow his voters while distancing themselves from the man have generally found out otherwise the hard way. The RNC clearly remembers that math heading into the midterms. Whether that's a durable strategy for 2028 and beyond is a fair question. But for this cycle, the party isn't hedging, and any lawmaker hoping to triangulate their way to reelection just got told, in the least ambiguous way possible, that there's no room to do it.
