House Dem Debbie Dingell places Trump's Lake Ontario name change in the crosshairs

Debbie Dingell has decided that the hill worth dying on in Congress this year is the name of a lake. Not inflation, not the border, not the fentanyl pouring across it. Lake Ontario. Trump wants to rename it Lake America, and Dingell is drafting legislation to stop him cold. That's the priority.

Look, we get it, renaming a Great Lake after the country it sits in is exactly the kind of showy, symbolic move Trump loves and his critics love to hate. It's not going to fix a supply chain or lower a grocery bill. But the reaction tells you more than the gesture does. A member of Congress is putting actual legislative machinery behind blocking a name change, as if the republic hangs on whether cartographers write "Ontario" or "America" on a map. That's not oversight, that's theater responding to theater.

There's a real argument to be had about executive overreach on naming conventions, sure. Presidents have renamed things before and Congress has pushed back before. Fine. But watch what gets the floor time and what doesn't. Dingell isn't hauling anyone in front of committee over the border numbers or the state of Michigan's own economic pain. She's fighting over a lake sign.

If this is what counts as the opposition's fight right now, the country's problems are safe from serious scrutiny for a while longer. Voters aren't watching Washington to see who wins the lake. They're watching their bank accounts. Somebody in that building ought to notice the difference.
