House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries denounces Democratic Socialists of America's policy agenda

Hakeem Jeffries just told everyone he's not a socialist, which is a little like a fish announcing it's not a bicycle. Nobody accused him of being a card-carrying DSA member. But the fact that he felt the need to say it out loud, on the record, tells you something about where his party actually is right now.

This isn't really about Jeffries. It's about the ground shifting under him. The DSA wing isn't some fringe curiosity anymore, it's electing city council members, primarying incumbents, and setting the terms of debate in blue districts from New York to California. Jeffries has to distance himself precisely because the distance is shrinking. If it weren't a real problem for him, he wouldn't bother with the statement at all.

What's telling is what he didn't do. He didn't lay out a competing vision, didn't explain what he actually believes Democrats should stand for economically. He just drew a line around what he isn't. That's not leadership, that's triage. A party that spends its energy managing its own left flank instead of making a case to the country is a party still figuring out who it is.

We'd take this more seriously as a real break if it came with any specifics on policy, not just branding. Until then, it reads like a man trying to keep the boat from tipping without picking a side of it.
