It's the kind of idea that makes every legitimate worry about voter rolls and mail ballots look like a pretext, because now the story isn't about integrity, it's about a candidate for governor allegedly wanting armed federal presence at the ballot box. That's not a gray area. Federal law bars exactly that, and everyone who has spent five minutes on election law knows it.

Here's the thing that should bother Republicans more than Democrats: this hands the other side a gift they didn't have to earn. Every argument conservatives have made for years about clean voter lists, signature verification, chain of custody on ballots, all of it gets buried under a headline about intimidation at the polls.
