Jeffries won’t rule out kicking off committees centrist Democrats who backed condemning socialism

Two Democrats voted to condemn socialism and now their own leadership is dangling their committee seats over their heads. That's the actual story here, stripped of the process language Jeffries hid behind. "We haven't ruled anything in, we haven't ruled anything out" isn't neutrality. It's a warning shot dressed up as bureaucratic caution.

Think about what these members actually did. They voted for a resolution saying socialism is bad. That used to be the kind of vote you couldn't lose an election over, not something that gets you hauled in front of leadership for a talking-to about your future on committees. The fact that it's now a loyalty test tells you where the center of gravity in that caucus has moved, and it isn't toward the center.

Jeffries didn't have to answer the question the way he did. He could have said something anodyne, that members vote their districts, that disagreement is healthy. Instead he left the punishment option open on purpose, which is its own kind of message to every other Democrat sitting in a swing district watching this play out. Vote your conscience, sure, but know we're keeping score.

The irony is thick. A party that spent years insisting it wasn't lurching left just showed two of its own members what happens when they act like it isn't. If condemning socialism is now a punishable offense in the Democratic caucus, they should just say so plainly instead of hiding behind "it's a process."
