Kansas ICE raids add to GOP headaches in increasingly competitive

Kansas hasn't sent a Democrat to the Senate since the 1930s. That's the kind of streak that should make a Republican incumbent sleep easy, but Roger Marshall is awake and sweating. The ICE raids sweeping through the state have put immigration enforcement right in the middle of a race that was already being squeezed by fuel prices and rural anxiety. There's no good way to enforce the law quietly, and the Biden administration's noise machine is making sure every arrest reads like a local crisis.

The raids themselves aren't the problem. Most voters in Kansas want border security and aren't squeamish about deportations. The problem is that Republicans are suddenly explaining themselves on turf where Democrats get to play victimhood politics. A suburban mom in Johnson County might support the idea of removing violent offenders, but she doesn't want to see a raid at the poultry plant down the road. That's the gap between policy and politics, and the GOP is getting burned by it.

Marshall has to walk a line that's getting narrower by the day. He can defend the raids as necessary federal action while also sounding like he cares about the economic fallout. Meanwhile, fuel prices aren't helping. Every fill-up is a reminder that Kansas families are paying more for the same life they lived four years ago. It's not a fair political fight, but it's the one Republicans are in.

The party still has an enormous structural edge in this state. But 94 years of history doesn't vote. People do, and right now they're feeling a squeeze. Kansas should stay red, but if the GOP treats this seat as safe, it won't be.
