Karen Bass needs to make the case — before it’s too late

Every losing campaign has a moment when the candidate looks up from the spreadsheets and realizes the voters have moved on. For Karen Bass, that moment is now. It shows an incumbent in deep trouble, and it confirms what residents already know: the city has gotten worse on her watch, and she has spent most of her time talking past the problem instead of fixing it.

Bass didn’t create every mess in LA, but she owns the response. Street encampments are still multiplying, businesses are still boarding up, and too many Angelenos feel like their neighborhoods are being managed by people who don’t live in them. The poll numbers reflect that. The clock is running out because she spent months assuming the left’s base would turn out for her. That assumption may be dead. She can still make a case, but it has to be blunt and it has to be now. That means admitting the city’s progressive leadership failed. It means siding with the retail worker over the person smashing a window, with the homeowner over the activist who explains away the fear. LA doesn’t need a caretaker, it needs a supervisor. If she waits until the ballots drop, the moment will pass. And the next chapter of LA politics won’t be written by her. It will be written by someone much further left.
