Kevin McCarthy to Newsmax: GOP Has Edge to Keep House

Kevin McCarthy saying Republicans "should" hold the House is a little like a coach telling you the field is tilted in his favor before kickoff. He's not wrong about the redistricting math. Several states redrew lines in ways that genuinely help the GOP this cycle, and that's just the reality of how these maps get built every ten years by whoever holds the pen. But turning that into a prediction of victory, and then pre-loading the excuse if it doesn't happen, is the part worth noticing.

Because that's really what he did here. If the maps favor you and you still lose, McCarthy says that raises questions about how the party campaigned. Translation: if this goes badly, don't blame the lines, blame the candidates and the strategy. That's not nothing. It's an early signal from a guy who knows this building better than almost anyone that the margin for error is thin and leadership knows it.

Republicans should take the compliment and the warning together. A favorable map wins you nothing on its own. Voters still show up, still compare records, still punish a party that looks distracted or chaotic. If McCarthy's framing holds, the House isn't sitting there waiting to be collected in November. It has to be earned district by district, same as always, redistricting edge or not.
