Kudlow urges Cruz to consider 2024 presidential run this November

Larry Kudlow telling Ted Cruz on live TV that he “might want to think” about launching a presidential run in November is one of those Washington-media moments that’s supposed to feel like insider wisdom, but mostly lands as noise. We’re barely through one election cycle before the next one is being queued up on a studio set. It’s like the country is a backdrop, and the real action is the chase for the next camera hit.

The odd part is the timing and the mismatch. Kudlow asked Cruz about 2028, then nudged him toward 2024-style urgency anyway. Cruz didn’t become a household name by dodging attention, but he also knows what a November launch actually is: a donor scramble, a staff shuffle, and months of talk about the candidate, not about border security, inflation, or the mess overseas. For a party that keeps saying it wants to talk to working people again, we sure spend a lot of time gaming out calendars.

If Cruz wants to run, he should run when he has a case that’s bigger than “it’s your turn” or “the lane is open.” That case would have to explain why he’s the right messenger for a country that’s tired of chaos and tired of being told everything is fine. Not just a sharper debate performance or another round of viral clips. People want results, and they can smell a media-fueled audition from a mile away.

Republicans don’t need more treadmill politics. We need candidates who treat the presidency like a job with deliverables, not a brand extension. If Kudlow wants to be helpful, he can ask Cruz what he’s done lately to change the trajectory of the country and what, specifically, he’d do on Day One. That would be a better use of airtime than encouraging yet another early start to the longest campaign season on Earth.
