Because this child’s mother is apparently so wrapped up in the Lindsay Clancy case that she’s sitting in a courtroom, and her lawyer is using a planned Disney World trip to explain her state of mind. There is something deeply off about that combination, and it says more about our culture than we might want to admit.

The details matter here. This mom wasn’t just aware of the Clancy case. She was consumed by it. The obsession had her texting family about a Disney vacation while the reality around her was falling apart. That is the kind of thing you hear about and think, how did no one catch this earlier? Her lawyer is doing a job, sure, but the picture that emerged is of a woman living in a fantasy while her real life, her actual child with delayed speech, was waiting for attention. A vacation was easier than a wake-up call.

We can argue about mental health and the courts all day, but there’s a simpler truth. The nonstop true crime culture has turned killers into household names and morbid curiosity into a personality. This woman was so far down that hole she couldn’t see her own family in front of her. We need less sympathy for the obsessed and more protection for the innocent. Barrett’s first words are the only normal thing in this mess. Let’s hope somebody in his life starts paying attention to him instead of the story they’ve built around themselves.
