Mamdani, AOC draw heat for laughing at 9/11 memorial

There are places where you just don’t do cute. A 9/11 memorial is one of them. So when video shows NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez laughing on camera during a ceremony for the victims, people aren’t “overreacting.” They’re reacting like New Yorkers and like Americans with a memory longer than a news cycle.

Maybe it was a side comment. Maybe it was nerves. Fine. Then say that. But if you’re going to hold power in the city that buried firefighters and cops by the hundreds, you don’t get to wave away how it looks. A memorial isn’t a backdrop for your day. It’s a moment that asks public officials to act like grown-ups, even when the cameras are awkwardly close.

Republicans are right to call it out, and not because they need another clip for social media. This is basic respect, the kind you show to the families standing there trying to keep it together. And yes, it hits a nerve because the same crowd that polices everyone else’s tone for every perceived slight suddenly wants grace and benefit of the doubt for themselves. If you can’t be serious on 9/11, when can you be serious?

Mamdani and AOC can fix this in about 30 seconds. Own it. Apologize plainly. Don’t blame the “angle” or the “context.” Don’t act offended that people noticed. The point is the people you’re supposed to be honoring. New York has had enough performance. It could use a little humility.
