Mamdani, James Sue Trump Admin Over Immigrant Welfare Policy

New York City’s new mayor is already doing what New York City mayors do best: suing Washington and calling it compassion. Zohran Mamdani says the Trump administration is “illegally expanding” a rule that lets federal officials weigh welfare use when deciding green cards and visas. That framing is convenient. It’s also a dodge. If you’re applying to move here permanently, self-sufficiency isn’t a slur.

Let’s talk about what this policy actually is. It’s not some plot to deport people who hit a rough patch. It’s a screening tool for future immigration benefits, built around a basic question every family asks: can we afford this? We have finite resources, real backlogs, and working Americans who watch the bill grow. A green card is not an entitlement program with a passport attached.

Mamdani’s lawsuit is really about optics. City Hall gets to pose as the defender of immigrants while quietly pushing the costs onto everyone else, including the very neighborhoods politicians love to photograph. New York can expand local benefits if it wants. But it doesn’t get to demand that federal immigration policy pretend budgets don’t exist. Washington has every right to set terms for legal entry, and “don’t become dependent” is a reasonable one.

And we should be honest about the politics. The same crowd that tells Americans to “learn to code” when factories close suddenly insists the federal government must never ask newcomers about public assistance. The Trump administration is doing something boring but necessary here: prioritizing an immigration system that doesn’t punish taxpayers for doing the right thing. Mamdani can file the suit. We can still say the quiet part out loud: the rule makes sense.
