Mary Peltola knows her state better than Kamala Harris does, and apparently better than Harris's own fundraising team. The former VP blasted out an email tying her name to Peltola's Senate bid, and within days Peltola was publicly distancing herself from it. That's not a subtle move. That's a candidate looking at Alaska's electorate and deciding that the last thing she needs is Kamala Harris as a co-brand.

It's worth remembering why. Alaska went for Trump twice, and Harris lost it by double digits in 2024. Peltola herself won her old House seat by running as a moderate, pro-fish, pro-gun Democrat who kept her distance from national party messaging. She's not new to this. Sending a fundraising email that pairs your name with a candidate's without coordinating the optics is either sloppy or tone-deaf, and neither is a great look for someone still positioning herself as a national Democratic figure. Peltola had to clean up a mess she didn't make.

A Democrat willing to publicly reject Harris is still a Democrat running in a competitive race, and Alaskans have shown before they'll split tickets.
