Mexican lawmaker facing backlash for eating traditional iguana

So a Mexican senator stops during a tour in Carácuaro, sits down at a local spot, and eats iguana soup. That’s the whole scandal. Not a bribe. Not a missing budget. A bowl of soup.

We get that “iguana” sets off alarms for people who’ve never been anywhere that serves it. But in plenty of places, this is normal local food, not some stunt for shock value. If you’re going to demand that elected officials “respect the culture,” it’s a little odd to punish one for actually doing it in public, in the town she’s visiting, with the people who live there.

The backlash also feels like the internet doing what it does best: turning something small into a morality play. Was the animal sourced legally? Is it a protected species in that area? Those are real questions. If there’s a conservation or public health angle, say so and prove it. If not, this is just outrage shopping, and it’s a bad habit no matter what country you live in.

And let’s be honest, this is the kind of story politicians on the left love to amplify when it helps them sneer at “rural” people, then suddenly they act horrified when rural people don’t eat like a downtown brunch menu.
