Mike Rogers Calls for El-Sayed to Return Terror-Linked Donations

Mike Rogers is right to put a spotlight on this. When you’re running for the U.S. Senate, you don’t get to shrug and say, “Well, it’s just politics” after taking checks from people tied to an outfit that has faced serious questions for years. Michigan voters aren’t being “divisive” for wondering where the money comes from. If the connections are real, the money should go back.

The tell is how fast campaigns usually move when the situation is clean. If a donor is controversial but not disqualifying, they’ll say so and stand by it. If a donation turns out to be a mistake, they cut a check to a charity and move on. What you don’t do is hide behind vague statements and hope the story dies. This is a basic test of judgment, not a gotcha.

El-Sayed can settle this in a day. Name the donors, explain the relationship, and return anything connected to groups that have been credibly accused of enabling extremist networks. If he thinks the charges are unfair, make the case clearly, with facts, and take the heat. But if the campaign can’t even bring itself to do the obvious clean-up, that says plenty.

Republicans have their own problems when it comes to donors, and we’re not pretending otherwise. The difference is whether you treat sketchy money like a nuisance or a red line. Rogers is putting down a marker, and it’s the right one. Senate candidates should not be laundering reputations with other people’s checkbooks..
