Musk picks his first GOP warriors as a 2026 money surge takes shape

Eight hundred grand in twelve days tells you Musk isn't dabbling this cycle, he's picking sides early and picking them loud. The Paxton bet is the interesting one. This isn't a guy who needs introducing to Texas voters or a race anyone thought was up for grabs ideologically. It's a signal about who Musk wants running the Senate bench, and it's a signal to every other Republican watching their own primary math change overnight.

Money this early does something specific: it scares off some challengers and emboldens others, long before a single voter has weighed in. That's not inherently corrupt, candidates have always needed patrons, but Musk's checkbook operates at a different scale than the usual donor class. When one man's PAC can reshape a primary's center of gravity in less than two weeks, it's worth asking what happens to the candidates who don't get picked, and whether "electability" starts meaning "whoever Musk likes" instead of whoever actually fits the state.

None of this means Musk is wrong about Paxton or anyone else on his list. He's entitled to spend his money on candidates who share his instincts, same as any other donor.
