Newsom signs bills to prevent Trump from ‘dictatorial control’

California just passed a law that makes it a felony to seize ballots or election records, and the governor had the nerve to say he’s doing it to stop “dictatorial control.” Let’s be honest about what this is: a preemptive defense against a threat that hasn’t materialized. There is no evidence of federal agents planning to storm polling places in Sacramento or Los Angeles. There is, however, a very real political motive to make California look like the last line of defense against a Trump presidency the state’s leaders still can’t accept.

The bills restrict law enforcement near polling places and create new criminal penalties for anyone touching election materials. The stated goal is protecting voters from intimidation. But read the fine print on the politics: this is California building a legal fortress to resist federal oversight. The message to the rest of the country is that they think their election system needs protection from the President of the United States. That’s not governance. That’s theater dressed up in felony statutes.

Newsom’s allies will say he’s defending democracy. We’d say he’s reinforcing the distrust he helped create. Instead of reassuring voters that their ballots are counted fairly, he’s telling them to fear the people who might ask questions about the process. The party of election integrity has become the party of election paranoia. If the left is so confident in their administration of elections, they shouldn’t need new laws to keep the feds away. They should just run a clean process and let the results speak for themselves.
