NY Gov Kathy Hochul accuses Trump of 'defunding the police,' says DHS is 'withholding' counterterror funds

Kathy Hochul spent years dodging the "defund the police" label when it was progressive activists in Albany and New York City pushing bail reform and budget cuts that actually hollowed out precincts. Now that a Republican administration is holding back a slice of federal counterterror money, suddenly she's fluent in the phrase. That's not a policy critique, that's a rebrand.

Worth asking what the money is actually for and why DHS is sitting on it. If there are real conditions attached, tied to sanctuary city policies or how funds have been spent in the past, that's a legitimate argument to have out loud, with numbers, not a soundbite designed for a press conference backdrop. New Yorkers dealing with subway crime and understaffed precincts deserve an actual explanation, not a slogan lifted from the same activists Hochul used to run from.

There's also something a little rich about a governor who has leaned on Washington for security funding suddenly discovering that federal money isn't a blank check. Grants come with strings, that's how it's worked under every administration. If Hochul wants leverage, the better move is making her case on the merits, not borrowing a line that will remind a lot of voters exactly who was defunding what a few years ago.
