Ontario premier answers Trump's 'Lake America' with giant 'Lake Ontario' sign

Doug Ford put up a sign. That's it. That's the story. Trump floats a joke about renaming the Great Lakes "Lake America" and the premier of Ontario responds by planting a billboard on the shoreline that says "Lake Ontario. Now and Always." It's the kind of thing that plays great on Canadian Twitter for about a day and accomplishes nothing else.

Here's the part that's actually funny: nobody in Washington is drawing up legislation to rename Lake Ontario. This was never a policy proposal, it was a riff, the kind of thing Trump says to get a reaction and watch people lose their minds over. Ford took the bait, spent money on a sign, and got exactly the headline he wanted. Good for him, politically. It costs him nothing at home to look defiant against the American president right now, especially with tariffs and trade tension already souring the relationship.

But step back for a second. Canada's economy is more dependent on the United States than the reverse, not the other way around, and picking a fight over lake nomenclature is a strange hill to plant a flag on when there are actual trade issues on the table that matter to actual workers on both sides of the border. If Ford wants to spend his political capital on symbolism, that's his call. Just don't mistake a billboard for leverage.

What this really shows is how easy it's become to turn a throwaway comment into an international incident. Everybody gets their moment of performative outrage, everybody moves on, and the actual business between two allied countries sits there waiting for someone to take it seriously.
