Ontario premier wants Republicans to lose House and Senate over

Doug Ford wants Republicans to lose the House and Senate because he’s mad about tariffs. That’s not “standing up for Canada.” That’s a foreign politician trying to reach into American elections and twist the wheel. It’s not his vote, and it’s not his call. If a U.S. governor said he hoped Canadians tossed their parliament to punish Ottawa, every newsroom up there would call it meddling.

Ford can argue his case on trade. Fine. But hoping for a midterm wipeout isn’t about maple syrup and lumber. It’s a pressure tactic aimed at Congress, dressed up as concern. That’s political theater, not diplomacy. And it’s a weird look from a guy who runs a province that depends on U.S. buyers, U.S. investment, and U.S. security more than he’d ever admit out loud.

As for “holding Trump accountable,” we’ve heard this song. The same people who lecture Americans about “democracy” get real comfortable with cross-border interference when it targets Trump. Tariffs are leverage. Sometimes they’re messy. But the point is to get fair terms, not to win applause at a press conference. If Canada wants a deal, it should bring a deal. Not a wish list for how our voters should punish the president they elected.

We’d rather see less chest-thumping on both sides and more adults in a room hashing out cars, energy, dairy, and border enforcement like neighbors who actually need each other. Ford has a job in Ontario. Trump has a job in Washington. And American midterms are not a Canadian bargaining chip.
