Pennsylvania lawmaker suggests Trump should rename Lake Erie to

Somebody in Harrisburg looked at Lake Erie and thought, “You know what this needs? A rebrand.” State Rep. David Maloney wants President Trump to rename it “Lake Pennsylvania,” apparently inspired by the recent spate of headline-grabbing name changes to other bodies of water. It’s a funny idea in the way a bumper sticker is funny. But it also lands with a thud because Lake Erie is not a conference room. It’s one of the Great Lakes. People live and work around it. Not everything needs a stunt.

We get the instinct, though. Trump understands symbols. Names matter because they tell you who’s respected, who gets erased, and who gets to set the terms. That’s why the left fights so hard over them, from schools to streets to holidays. But there’s a difference between defending history and doing a gimmick that hands your critics an easy punchline. This is the kind of idea that makes cable news happy and voters tired.

Pennsylvania has real problems to solve that are sitting right there on the shoreline: jobs, energy, shipping, water quality, and the endless tangle of federal rules that make building anything feel impossible. If Maloney wants to get Trump’s attention, there are better ways. Push for faster permits. Fight for domestic manufacturing and pipelines. Take on the bureaucracies that punish working towns. Do the work that changes people’s lives, not the map label.

And for the record, Lake Erie borders multiple states and a whole other country. Trying to slap “Pennsylvania” on it doesn’t come off as pride so much as picking a fight with geography. We’d rather see Pennsylvania Republicans spend their political capital on winning fights that matter, not starting one that’s guaranteed to end as a late-night joke.
