Plane carrying House lawmaker running for governor crash-lands

Nobody should have to do a cold midnight swim just to get home from a campaign stop. But that’s exactly what happened Saturday night when the small plane carrying Rep. Tom Tiffany, now running for governor in Wisconsin, crash-landed in a lake and he and the pilot had to get out and swim to safety. Thank God they made it out. That part matters more than the politics.

It also says something about the kind of candidates we’re sending out on the trail. This isn’t a motorcade life. It’s little planes, long drives, county fairs, and bad weather you can’t wish away with a press release. When a story like this breaks, it’s easy for people to treat it like a punchline or a viral clip. It’s not. Small-plane travel is serious business, and it goes wrong fast.

We don’t know yet what caused the crash-landing, and nobody should pretend they do. Investigators will sort out whether it was a mechanical issue, visibility, pilot error, or something else entirely.
