Progressive Gets Raked Over the Coals for Saying Black Leaders 'Defang the White Left'

The phrase doing all the damage here is "defang the white left." Not exactly subtle. Whoever said it was describing black leaders as a kind of pacifying agent, useful for taking the edge off white progressives rather than as people with their own agenda, their own constituents, their own reasons for leading. That's not a slip of the tongue. That's a worldview showing through for a second before the candidate remembered the cameras were on.

We've said for years that the progressive coalition treats black voters as a bloc to be managed rather than a community to be represented. This is what that looks like when someone forgets to hide it. The whole theory of "defanging" only makes sense if you already assume the real fight is happening somewhere else, among white activists, and black leadership is just a tool for keeping that fight from getting too hot. That is not solidarity. That is strategy, and it treats actual people as furniture.

The predictable part is what happens next. There will be an apology, maybe a resignation from some committee nobody's heard of, and then everyone moves on like the comment was a one-off rather than a window into how these campaigns actually talk about black communities behind closed doors. Nobody on the left will ask the obvious follow-up question, which is how many other staffers and strategists think the exact same thing but are better at editing themselves.

If a Republican had said something like this, it would run on cable news for a week straight. Instead it'll get a news cycle, maybe two, and the same people demanding accountability from everyone else will find a way to shrug this one off.
