Rahm Emanuel shuts socialists out of Democratic tent: ‘Run as a separate party’

Rahm Emanuel telling Fox News that socialists shouldn't be welcome in the Democratic Party is the kind of admission you only get once a party starts panicking about its own base. This is a guy who ran the DNC's playbook for a decade, who helped build the coalition that now can't decide what it actually believes. When he says the DSA should "run as a separate party," he's not being a truth-teller. He's trying to put the genie back in the bottle after his own party spent years courting it for votes and volunteers.

The funny part is how late this realization arrives. Zohran Mamdani wins a mayoral primary in New York, AOC becomes the most recognizable Democrat under fifty, and suddenly the guy who used to run Chicago wants to draw a line nobody drew when it was politically convenient not to. You don't get to spend a decade winking at the socialist wing for turnout and enthusiasm, then act shocked when they start winning.

We've said for a while that the Democratic Party doesn't actually know what it is anymore, and this is exhibit A. Emanuel isn't wrong that socialism and the Democratic brand are an awkward fit for swing voters in Ohio or Michigan. But his solution, kicking them out after the fact, is pure damage control dressed up as principle. Voters can tell the difference between a party having a debate and a party having a crackup.

What's actually happening here is a fight over who owns a losing message. Democrats can't out-socialist the socialists and they can't disown them without alienating the energy that shows up to knock on doors. Emanuel picked a side on Fox News because he knows which way the polling is trending in the districts that actually decide elections. That's not conviction. That's triage.
