Rand Paul backs James Comer for Kentucky governor, says ‘great

Rand Paul doesn’t hand out endorsements like free samples. He’s too independent for that, which makes his support for James Comer more than a formality. Paul is betting that Comer’s work as House oversight chairman translates into a winning statewide campaign, and honestly, it’s hard to argue. Comer has spent the last year putting the Biden family’s business dealings under the microscope, and Kentucky voters tend to reward that kind of fight.

This endorsement looks like an effort to clear the field. Kentucky’s GOP primary could get crowded, but Paul’s involvement sends a signal to other would-be candidates that the establishment wing and the libertarian wing are comfortable with Comer. That’s a rare enough thing in any state. Comer also knows Kentucky beyond Washington. He’s been agriculture commissioner, he grew up in Monroe County, and he’s not going to need a refresher course on rural issues. The state’s next governor needs to govern, not just tweet.

Democrats will try to paint Comer as a D.C. insider, but that misses what he’s actually done there. He took on the hardest oversight assignment in Congress and didn’t flinch. That’s the resume Kentucky needs right now. Paul’s early backing gives Comer a built-in coalition, and if the primary does end up clearing, Republicans can focus their energy on holding the governor’s mansion. That’s a smart play, and it’s good to see the party getting its act together before the race even heats up.
