RFK Punishes Blue States For Rampant Fraud Concerns

A billion dollars is not a rounding error, and that's exactly why HHS is asking California and Minnesota to show their work. This isn't some abstract audit exercise. Medicaid claims got flagged, and rather than just cutting the check anyway and hoping nobody notices, RFK Jr.'s department is saying prove it. That's not punishment. That's the job.

What's telling is how fast this gets framed as political retaliation against "blue states" instead of what it actually is: a federal agency doing the bare minimum of due diligence with taxpayer money. If the claims are clean, California and Minnesota lose nothing but a little paperwork time. If they're not clean, then billions of dollars meant for people who actually need Medicaid got siphoned off somewhere else, and somebody should probably want to know where.

There's a pattern here worth noticing. States that talk the most about protecting the vulnerable are often the ones most resistant to anyone checking whether the money for the vulnerable is actually reaching them. Waste and fraud concerns in Medicaid aren't new, and they aren't partisan by nature. They become partisan the moment officials start treating verification as an attack rather than a formality.

Withholding funds pending proof isn't cruelty. It's what happens when trust runs out and someone finally asks for receipts.
