Seattle City Council Approves Funding For ‘Trans-Refugees’

Three hundred thousand dollars to help people move to Seattle because they're trans. Not housing money for the thousands of Seattleites already sleeping in tents along I-5. Not a dent in the fentanyl crisis that's killing residents by the day. A relocation fund, for a specific identity group, from a city council that voted for it without a single dissent.

Call it what it is: a magnet policy. If you tell people across the country that Seattle will pay to bring them in, some will come, and the city will have created a new obligation for services it hasn't budgeted for beyond this one line item. What happens in year two, when the "crisis" hasn't ended because you subsidized more of it? Cities that build incentive programs like this rarely think past the press release.

The "ongoing crisis and displacement" framing is doing a lot of work here too. Nobody is rounding up trans Americans and marching them out of red states. People are choosing to move, the same way anyone weighs a job, rent, or family ties. Dressing that up as a humanitarian emergency requiring municipal funding is how you get a unanimous vote instead of an actual debate about whether this is the best use of scarce public money.

Seattle taxpayers deserve a government that treats its own encampments, its own overdose deaths, and its own crumbling infrastructure as the emergency. Instead they got a council eager to make a national statement with local dollars. That's not compassion, that's priorities out of order.
