Social worker sues after she says she refused to conceal

Jeanette Martinez has a simple job in Albuquerque Public Schools. She's a social worker. Now she's suing because the district told her to keep secrets from parents about their own children's gender transitions. That's not a gray area. That's a violation of her conscience and her First Amendment rights.

The policy apparently treats parents as a threat rather than the adults responsible for those kids. Martinez refused to go along. Good for her. The district's position is that a student's gender identity trumps the natural authority of mom and dad. The school district is not a family. It's a bureaucracy with social-engineering goals. Parents have a right to know what's happening to their children during school hours, especially when medical decisions might be involved.

We've seen this pattern across the country. Schools hiding information, training staff to use "preferred names" behind parents' backs, and treating any adult who objects as a bigot. But Martinez is not a bigot. She's a professional who asked for honesty. The lawsuit isn't just about her job. It's about whether government employees can be forced to deceive as a condition of employment. The state doesn't get to decide that a child's confusion outweighs a parent's love and responsibility.

Albuquerque Public Schools may win on legal technicalities. That doesn't mean they're right. In the meantime, Martinez deserves credit for standing up and putting her name on the line. We hope other professionals with the same dilemma find the courage to follow her lead.
