Speaker Mike Johnson says GOP needs more time to fix Biden-era

Mike Johnson isn’t wrong to say Republicans walked into a busted room. The last few years were a blur of trillion-dollar bills, agency edicts, and promises that somehow everything would pay for itself later. It didn’t. Voters can feel that in grocery aisles, on rent checks, and in the simple fact that Washington still can’t do the basics without drama. The mess is real, and it has names and dates.

But “we need more time” is the kind of line that makes people roll their eyes, and for good reason. Republicans asked for the gavel. They got it. That comes with deadlines and decisions, not just press lines about what Democrats did. There are things the House can do right now: force clean votes, expose the worst spending, and put Democrats on record defending the Biden-era status quo. Time is not a strategy.

If Johnson wants patience, he should pair it with a short list the public can track. Border enforcement that actually works. Real oversight of agencies that act like lawmakers. Spending bills that stop treating taxpayers like an afterthought. And yes, make the case that the Biden years were reckless, but do it with receipts and with action that bites. Show progress people can see, not process people can’t.

This is where Republicans can help President Trump, too. Voters already know what Trump is running against: the chaos and denial of the Biden years. The House should make that contrast concrete every week with hearings that matter and votes that matter. Democrats had their turn. If we’re saying the country needs a reset, then Congress has to start acting like it.
