Steve Hilton makes provocative plea to anti-Trump Californians: ‘You have a choice’

Steve Hilton isn't asking Democrats to become Republicans. He's asking them to look at what California actually is right now and decide if that's what they voted for. That's a smarter play than the usual gubernatorial race rhetoric, because it doesn't require anyone to abandon their identity, just their patience.

And patience is thin. Homelessness spending in the tens of billions with nothing to show for it on the sidewalks. A housing crisis that state Democrats have run one-party government through for over a decade. Businesses and residents leaving for Texas and Arizona at a pace that isn't a talking point, it's a moving van. Hilton's pitch works precisely because he's not selling Trump to Californians who despise Trump. He's selling competence to Californians who've watched competence disappear.

Whether it lands is a different question. California hasn't elected a Republican governor since Schwarzenegger, and plenty of anti-Trump voters will hear "cross party lines" and stop listening right there. But the fact that a real candidate is making this pitch openly, rather than pretending the state's dysfunction doesn't exist, says something about where things actually stand. People don't need to love the messenger to be furious about the mess.

If Hilton can get even a fraction of frustrated independents and disillusioned Democrats to actually vote on results instead of tribe, that's not a gimmick. That's just accountability finally showing up to the ballot box.
