Supreme Court again blocks Missouri from using Trump-backed

Missouri tried, again, to run with a Republican-backed congressional map, and the Supreme Court, again, told it no. Not after a full trial. Not after a clean, final ruling everyone can live with. Just another emergency block that leaves voters and candidates guessing about the rules until the last possible minute. If the map can’t survive basic review, it shouldn’t be rushed onto the ballot. But if it can, the courts owe people more than a shrug and a stop sign.

The part that should worry Missourians most is the process, not the partisan scorekeeping. When federal courts keep stepping in at the eleventh hour, it becomes less “election law” and more “election improv.” You can’t build public trust that way, and you can’t ask county clerks to run clean elections with shifting lines and shifting deadlines. Stop governing by last-minute litigation. Draw the districts, defend them on the merits, and get a final answer with enough runway for everyone involved.

Then there’s the contempt hearing hanging over Secretary of State candidate Denny Hoskins this week. Contempt isn’t a slap on the wrist. It’s the court saying you’re not taking its orders seriously. If Hoskins ignored a lawful directive, the response shouldn’t be performative outrage from either side. It should be accountability and clarity, fast. Courts need to explain, and officials need to comply. That is how you keep a tough issue from turning into a circus.

Yes, the map is Trump-backed, and Republicans have every right to fight for a fair map that follows the law and reflects real communities. But “fight” has to mean doing the work up front, not rolling the dice and hoping the Supreme Court bails you out on a late-night order. Missouri Republicans should tighten their process, get the legal case right, and win it clean. Because the only thing worse than losing a map is teaching voters that the system never really settles anything.
